Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan (born Jaya Bhaduri on 9 April 1948) is an Indian politician and former film actress. She is an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. She is the wife of Amitabh Bachchan, and is the mother of Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan. Bachchan is recognised as one of the finest Hindi film actresses of her time, particularly known for reinforcing a naturalistic style of acting in both mainstream and 'middle-of-the-road' cinema

Making her film debut as a teenager inSatyajit Ray's Mahanagar (1963), Bachchan's first screen role as an adult was in Guddi (1971), directed byHrishikesh Mukherjee, with whom she would collaborate in several films. She was noted for her performances in films including Uphaar (1971), Koshish (1972),Kora Kagaz (1974), among others. She appeared alongside her husband Amitabh Bachchan in films such asZanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) and
 Sholay(1975).

Jaya Bhaduri was born in Jabalpur[4] to a Hindu Bengali family. Her mother is Indira Bhaduri and her father, Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, was a writer, journalist and stage artist. She studied in St. Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal. She was awarded the Best All-India N.C.C. Cadet Award during the Republic Day celebrations in 1966

After almost a two-year political sabbatical, Jaya Bachchan is now once again making an entry into active politics.

Today she filed her nomination for Rajya Sabha as a Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate and is likely to get elected uncontested. She was a Rajya Sabha MP earlier from the party and her tenure came to an end in February, 2010.

She filed her nomination today in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Mrs Bachchan was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 as a SP nominee. She, however, declined the offer to be re-nominated after completing her term in 2010 when former SP leader Amar Singh, a man who was instrumental in shaping her political career, was suspended from the Samajwadi Party for his open defiance to Mulayam Singh Yadav.

However, she eventually sided with Mulayam Singh Yadav and the Bachchans snapped ties with Amar Singh who vowed to avenge what he called the betrayal by Mulayam Singh.

After its victory in the Assembly polls, the Samajwadi Party can send six MPs to the Rajya Sabha or Upper House. Besides Mrs Bachchan, the other five who are filing their nominations are Kiranmaya Nanda, Darshan Singh, Munnavar Salim, Brajbhushan Tiwari and Naresh Agarwal.
